Exclamation 2.5.0-RC1 available

Hi Folks,

I'm proud to announce the first (and normally last) release candidate of version 2.5.0.
You can download 2.5.0-RC1 over here: http://s3.amazonaws.com/kettle/Kettle-2.5.0-RC1.zip

If the bug count goes down at the same rate and we manage to update the docs, you should see a release around the last week of the month of April.

All the best,

Matt

Thanks, that comment means a lot to me. A lot of tweaking was involved to say the least :-)

Default Changelog

This changelog 'Kettle 2.5.0 change log.pdf' is not yet complete, but it's almost there, I should have it finished in a couple of days tops.

Default 2.5.0-RC1 / New feature question...

Matt,

I noticed that in the DatabaseDialog class, the definition of wDriverClass member variable has been changed to a TextVar object (from Text). That happened at revision 3018.

For those not literate in the KETTLE codebase: the 'Driver Class' parameter of the 'Generic' connection type tab (of the 'Connection Information' dialog) has been tweaked to allow a variable.

Anyway, Is this feature going to remain once 2.5.0 GA is released?

Some time back I has asked (informally, on this forum) for this very feature and it was voted down by Sven. He had a reasonable explanation as to why, but I cannot seem to find the post right now.

So I guess I am wondering if I would be 'safe' to start using this feature and be confident that it will not 'disappear' in the GA release.

Regards,
JM

PS--2.5.X is looking to be fantastic from a developer as well as deployer standpoint. Good work!

Lol.... too many people wanting the generic database driver to be variable sensitive ... I tried it locally and it didn't affect too much after all.

You still will not be able to use the database type specific "extensions" (e.g. the MySQL options, but also some small hardcoded parts in the database parts of Kettle... "if this is Oracle: do something extra", ...), but that's the price you pay for using "generic" (you couldn't use them anyway when using generic before). Changing the real database types in kettle (the ones on the first tab) to be variable sensitive is not going to happen I think.

For it to stay or not... it is a release candidate version so yes... unless it would cause some serious complications.

Regards,
Sven

I recently learned that Progress (my source dB) changed its JDBC driver name between version 9.X and 10.X ... so this specific feature is really going to save some time and effort.

JM
